About Us

Who are we?

Tawa Union Parish was formed in July 1972 when St. Stephen’s Methodist Church, Elena Place, St. Aidan’s Presbyterian Church Linden, the Tawa Associated Churches of Christ, St Luke’s, Redwood, caught the vision of church union and decided to join together. The original denominations had been in Tawa for varying periods prior to union, Methodist since 1850, Presbyterians since 1949, and Associated Churches of Christ since 1961. In 2002 we celebrated 30 years of union with a weekend of celebrations.

Many positive things have happened as a result of union. We enjoy a variety of worship styles led by ministers from one of the three founding denominations. Like many union parishes our worship and fellowship reflect a unique mix of the founding denominations and we enjoy a variety of different styles of worship each Sunday. A particular feature of the parish is lay leadership and participation in worship. The strong and energetic Tongan Fellowship adds cultural richness.

In 2005 after the building had been extensively upgraded, we enjoyed another opportunity to celebrate the strength and vibrancy of our church community as we officially opened our much improved improved facilities. See photos in the Information Centre.  Our focus is on the community around us in Tawa, to provide welcoming and affordable environment for community group activities and a safe and open exploration of contemporary Christianity.

Tawa Union is an active member of the Uniting Congregations of Aotearoa New Zealand (UCANZ) and the Wellington Joint Regional Committee (JRC). Our members are active in the local church courts of Presbytery and Synod and regularly attend Assembly and Conference.
